The transmission is a goner. I got it to start without tripping the trans prog error, and it wouldn’t take any gear, not even third. If I revved it up, it would make a very loud bang and jolt the car as it tried to engage, and then nothing. So yeah, it seems like it needs to be fully up to temp for the transmission to do anything at all, and that doesn’t say good things about the condition of the internals. What also happened this week, is my friend with the identical colour 540i got into a little accident. Everyone is okay, but his bumper is cracked, and his fender is damaged beyond repair. Now that I know I’m not just flushing this things fluid to get it going, and my friend could use the bumper, fender, maybe hood, and drivers door (because working window and functioning door brake), I think the 530 is gonna turn into his parts car.

This would’ve been a solid little daily, probably, but the timing of my friends accident and the acquisition of this makes it seem like it was meant to fix his car, and not be a big project for me. Plus, this just sends me back to my original plan, which isn’t bad at all. Continue dailying the Immortal Blazer, while I save for a Euro early E30, a Euro E28, or maybe a Euro E24.....

That is quite nice, but I’m missing having a car that’s actually engaging to drive. Something more like this

E30s, E28s, and E24s are my favourite things I’ve driven so far, it’s tricky to decide between them. Another E34 isn’t out of the question either, they’re also great to drive

Not a bad plan, but he’s just buying it from me for what I paid for it

5hp24 Or 5hp30?

If 5hp24, probably a busted A drum, but you would still have reverse and in forward gears once it banged it should throw tsfp and lock itself in 3rd... meaning with enough go pedal input it should move.

If 5hp30, probably just a valve body issue. Few hundred for a rebuilt valve body from http://www.erikssonindustries.com plus a few hours of your time and you’ll be back to rolling hard... until the next item in the cooling system decides to play pop goes the weasel.

5hp18 apparently, it does have reverse still, reluctantly. I forgot to mention that. Also the last time I tried driving it it will give me the check engine light, but no trans prog anymore

What about an E39 540i/6, A.K.A “Peak BMW”?

If it was going to be a daily, possibly. This is in theory going to be my second car, and as such it doesn’t need to be as reliable or modern-ish as I like my daily to be. I also don’t like the technological leap from the E34 to the E39, or the weight. Plus I’m just a sucker for E34s and E28s

To me, the E39 just doesn’t hold a candle to the design of these guys
